First footer, Vietnamese “Xông đất” (or “đạp đất”) is a traditional Vietnamese custom performed at the beginning of the Lunar New Year, often right after midnight on New Year’s Eve. In this custom, the first person to enter a family’s home at the start of the year is considered the “first footer” or the “one who brings luck” (người xông đất). This person is believed to set the tone for the household’s fortune for the entire year, based on their age, personality, and general aura.
Significance of the First Footer Custom:
- Bringing Luck and Prosperity: Vietnamese people believe that a person who is compatible in age and has good energy can bring fortune, prosperity, and good luck to the family for the year ahead.
- Warding off Misfortune: The first footer is thought to help sweep away the previous year’s misfortunes, opening up a fresh and positive start for the family.
- Fostering Bonds and Optimism: This custom is an opportunity for people to exchange good wishes, reinforcing family and community bonds.
- Wishing for Health and Peace: Beyond luck and prosperity, the custom also symbolizes wishes for health and peace for the entire family throughout the year.
Choosing a person for the first-footing is often a careful decision. This person is typically selected based on compatibility with the family’s age and is known for a cheerful, positive personality. People in mourning or experiencing personal difficulties are usually avoided as first-footers to prevent bringing unwanted energy into the home.
