In Christianity, God (Thiên Chúa) is the Creator and the source and foundation of all things. Christians believe that God is the Supreme Being, full of boundless love, justice, and mercy. God is worshiped in the Trinity: the Father, the Son (Jesus Christ), and the Holy Spirit – collectively known as the Holy Trinity. God is seen as the Creator of the world and all life and is the object of worship and love for Christians, Catholics, and various branches of Christianity.
The most widely accepted view is that God is omnipotent, omniscient and merciful, while others hold that human understanding does not allow for any full and true knowledge of God, and some mystical traditions hold that God’s authority is limited, otherwise, they argue, there would be no room for human choice.
The concept of a single God is characteristic of Monotheism, although religions of this tendency have not yet agreed on a common definition of God. Traces of attempts to attribute to God human qualities, gender and titles, as well as racial superiority, are found in some concepts of God. Some concepts portray God as the supreme Being, the eternal Being and the supernatural Being, transcending the diverse and changing world.
The concept of God is often linked to the principles of absolute truth and morality. Many people see God as a person with revealed attributes, while others think of him as a mysterious, vague, and distant power. There is also much questioning of the possibility of a relationship between God and human beings, leading to a myriad of different ways in which humans worship or seek to please God. While some believe that their concept of God is true and ultimate, others accept the possibility of many different definitions of God, all of which point to the same truth.
The Ten Commandments of God
The Ten Commandments of God (Decalogue) are a set of moral principles and life guidelines that God gave to Moses on Mount Sinai. These commandments are recorded in the books of Exodus and Deuteronomy in the Old Testament and are considered a moral foundation by Catholics. Here are the Ten Commandments of God according to Catholic tradition:
- Worship only one God: Have no other gods besides Him.
- Do not take the name of God in vain: Revere the name of God.
- Keep the Sabbath day holy: Dedicate time to worship God and rest.
- Honor your father and mother: Show respect and love for your parents.
- Do not kill: Protect and respect others’ lives.
- Do not commit adultery: Live virtuously and safeguard love through fidelity.
- Do not steal: Respect others’ property.
- Do not bear false witness: Avoid lying and harming others with words.
- Do not covet your neighbor’s spouse: Avoid unlawful desires and maintain faithfulness.
- Do not covet others’ goods: Refrain from jealousy or envy of others’ possessions.
These commandments emphasize respect for God, the sanctity of life, loyalty, and fair and loving treatment of others.
