Basic definition of zodiac signs.

In Western astrology, the 12 Zodiac signs are the twelve 30° sectors of the Zodiac, starting from the vernal equinox (one of the intersections of the Zodiac with the celestial equator), also known as the first point of Aries. The order of the 12 Zodiac signs is Aries, Taurus, Gemini, Cancer, Leo, Virgo, Libra, Scorpio, Sagittarius, Capricorn, Aquarius, and Pisces. Each sector is named after the constellation it passes through at the time of its naming.

The concept of the Zodiac Belt originated in Babylonian astrology, and was later influenced by Hellenistic culture. According to astrology, celestial phenomena are related to human activities according to the principle of “as above, so below”, so that the signs are said to exhibit characteristic modes of expression. Modern discoveries about the true nature of the celestial bodies have undermined the theoretical basis for assigning meaning to the signs of the Zodiac, and empirical scientific investigation has shown that predictions and advice based on these systems are inaccurate. Astrology is generally considered a pseudoscience.

Different approaches to measuring and dividing the sky are currently used by different astrological systems, although the traditions of the Zodiac’s names and symbols remain consistent. Western astrology measures from the Equinoxes and Solstices (points corresponding to the equinoxes and Solstices (the points corresponding to the longest and shortest days of the tropical year), while Vedic and Jyotiṣa astrology measure along the equatorial plane (the sidereal year). Precession results in Western astrology’s Zodiac divisions not corresponding to the modern constellations bearing similar names, while Jyotiṣa measurements still correspond to the background constellations.
