“Without a simple life, one cannot clarify their ambition; without tranquility, one cannot achieve great things.” – This is the advice of Zhuge Liang in his “Letter to My Son.” This saying has endured for thousands of years to prove a truth: the power of stillness will help you gradually become formidable.
The power of a calm mind is immense. It helps us shape and nurture our inner energy in a sustained, methodical, and sequential manner. In this way, our minds are tempered and our spirits are strengthened. Ultimately, when our minds are at peace, we can accomplish things that normal people cannot.
A Tranquil Mind Breeds Wisdom, Finding Peace in Chaos
When our minds are truly still, wonderful ideas emerge. Creative inspiration doesn’t just appear out of thin air; it needs a foundation of stillness to sprout and grow.
While most people rush and struggle for a living, if we can find a quiet space for ourselves—to read, to contemplate human nature and the ways of the world, and to understand the laws of social development—we can gradually build our careers with our own strength and wisdom.
Our ancestors often said: “Quietly sit and reflect on your own faults, when chatting idly, do not discuss the right and wrong of others.” This is a valuable reminder to introspect during moments of stillness.
When our hearts are steady, we can stand firm in any situation, no matter how chaotic. Conversely, if our hearts are agitated and hasty, stumbling is inevitable.
Zhuangzi said: “Still water is clear, and a dimming candle is about to go out.” Water only settles when it is still, and once clear enough, it can reflect all things. Similarly, when a candle’s light begins to fade, it’s a sign that it is about to burn out.
Only when the mind is at peace can we find a way out of life’s mazes and see opportunities that others cannot.
A Calm Mind Gathers Strength, Focusing on a Single Task
The power of stillness also lies in the ability to maintain intense focus. Concentration is like a persistent drop of water falling on the same spot on a rock. Though it takes a long time, eventually, “water dripping wears away a stone.”
The Vietnamese proverb also says: “With effort in grinding the iron rod, one day it will become a needle.”
If our minds are always restless and impatient, our intelligence, no matter how great, is useless. A tranquil soul, a calm demeanor, and a peaceful attitude will help us accumulate little by little, change gradually, and ultimately create a powerful transformation.
Xunzi said: “Without accumulating small steps, you cannot travel a thousand miles.” Life is the same: you must eat one bite at a time and walk one step at a time. A thousand-mile journey is made up of small, steady steps.
The power of stillness lies in the ability to focus all your energy on a single task. When you persist long enough, the results will be immense.
A Calm Mind Nurtures Vigor, Making One Invulnerable
A person with a tranquil heart becomes increasingly strong and no longer fears anything. The ancients once said: “In stillness there is a long-lasting flavor, and in leisure there is a fresh atmosphere.”
Our ancestors also believed that “Peace and tranquility are doctors that can cure all diseases.”
When the soul is calm, the body becomes healthy as well. When the mind has “stillness,” no worries or troubles can bring us down. Gradually, you will find that your actions are more thoughtful and methodical. Everything becomes smoother and more effortless, and a person with a tranquil mind is even less likely to get sick.
It can be said that stillness is the most formidable power. In this noisy and chaotic world, the person who can be still is the strongest. Because true strength does not lie in noisy places, but deep within the peaceful inner self.
Let your soul be at peace, cultivate your vigor, and your body will have its own resistance, your spirit will be better, and you may even be able to withstand the “one hundred poisons” of life.
Do you find that when you are truly calm, you gain the strength to overcome life’s difficulties?
